With its different methods of powering itself, the KA500 is specifically designed for emergency situations. The radio can be powered by three AA batteries (not included), a built-in rechargeable Ni-MH battery which can be charged by the AC adapter, by hand cranking, by solar panels, or by a computer, and by the dynamo hand crank, which not only keeps the built-in battery fully charged, but also provides power to the radio even when no battery is installed. Due to its revolutionary design and versatile functions, it's an ideal companion for emergency preparedness, outdoor activities, and traveling.
In contrast to previous emergency radios manufactured by Kaito, the KA500's rechargeable batteries are replaceable. Extra batteries are available for purchase from Kaito's website.
An internal generator powers the radio, flashlight, and reading lamp of the KA500 as well as recharging the internal NiMH battery pack. You can also use the crank to charge your cell phone by plugging it into the back of the radio's jack. In addition, this radio features a USB port, which can be used either to charge your radio with a PC or to charge other electronic gadgets.
AM, FM, shortwave, and NOAA weather stations can all be received with the KA500. By turning the switch, you can easily and conveniently tune into the 7 weather channels that are pre-programmed and numbered from 1-7, so no guesswork is involved.
In comparison with other solar-powered emergency radios, the KA500 has an adjustable 180-degree solar panel that lets you maximize sunlight exposure so that the radio can be powered or charged. There's a super-bright 5-LED reading lamp on the back of the solar panel when flipped up.
